Czech Makabi Union Against Antisemitism in Sport
The Czech Maccabi Union is watching the increasing manifestations with deep concern of antisemitism in football stadiums in the Czech Republic. These expressions, including hate speech chanting, symbolism and other forms of discrimination are not only unacceptable, but also contrary to values of sport, which should be a symbol of unity, respect and fair play. A recent incident where AC Sparta Praha captain Ladislav Krejčí signed a jersey from an unknown man, who had it made with the idea that the jersey would carry an anti-Semitic message with the number 88 referring to "Heil Hitler," and named "Jude Slavia," is completely unacceptable and shows how serious this problem is. At the same time this is not the first anti-Semitic and hateful incident in the recent history of Czech football. It is necessary recall the chanting of SK Slavia Prague fans "Death to Sparta" or "Death, death, death ACS, soul whores, gypsy blood" from February this year. But it's not just about anti-Semitism. Antigypsyism is also on the rise.
This is evidenced by the coach's comment Petr Rada from March of this year to visiting coach Tomáš Polách, whom he called "desperate gypsy". Similar incidents also happen in hockey. The management of extraleague Brno received a fine of CZK 30,000 for the fans' racist behavior towards Dominik Lakatoš, who plays for a rival club. These actions are a painful reminder that anti-Semitism and hatred in sport still exist and that it is perhaps actively fighting against them. Anti-Semitism, like any other form of hatred, has no place in society, let alone at sporting events, which should be a space for positive experiences and social gathering without prejudice. History repeatedly shows us what tragic consequences it can have spreading hatred and discrimination.
Therefore, it is imperative that each of us stands up against these manifestations and actively contributed to their eradication. Czech Makabi Union appeals to all actors of Czech football, including football clubs, players, coaches, fans and above all the FAČR, LFA and UEFA to stand unequivocally against anti-Semitism and other forms hatred and discrimination. Football is the most popular sport in the world, it is supposed to be a positive force in companies. However, in order to achieve this, we must all, whether as fans, players or coaches, working together to create a safe and friendly environment for all regardless of their origin, religion or political beliefs. We call on everyone to stand up against anti-Semitism and other forms of hatred, to condemn the expressions discrimination and behaved themselves with respect, dignity and decency.
